Property History
- Built by tobacconist Thomas Mann Branch. The expense of building the home may have contributed to his financial downfall as he was foreclosed within 2 years
- Bought by Adolph Dill, a German baker.
- Purchased by Isaac Davenport in 1846, principal in the first paper company and banker, died from falling debris when inspecting his burned-out factory after Civil War Evacuation Fire.
- Davenports continued to live here; the double house next door was built for children.
- Francis Glasgow, manager of Tredegar Iron Works, bought the house in 1887, raised 10 children. A strict Calvinist, he “never committed a pleasure”, per his daughter, Ellen Glasgow.
- Her father died in 1916. House had been deeded to Arthur Glasgow, Ellen’s oldest brother. He then upgraded the interior with bathrooms and electricity.
- Ellen continued to live here alone in the house until her death in 1945, with 5 servants and a secretary. She wrote all but one novel in the house.
- Ellen’s brother Arthur Glasgow gave the Glasgow House to the Virginia Historical Society after Ellen’s death in 1945.
- They immediately sold to APVA, who leased it to the University Center, a consortium of colleges
- The Richmond School Board then leased it for about 10 years to use for their Arts and
Humanities Center.
- Attorneys McCaul, Grigsby, Pearsall, Manning and Davis purchased the house for offices
in 1983
- Jack and Tricia Pearsall purchased it in 1986 and returned it to a residence.

Property Description
Words fail to describe the true significance of the Ellen Glasgow House. Built in 1841, the property both a Virginia and National Historic Landmark and it masterfully blends old world craftsmanship and detail that cannot be replicated today with a premium downtown location that provides access to modern and bustling downtown Richmond. “The Square Gray House” of the Pulitzer Prize winning author was the location where she wrote all but one of her novels. Ellen emotively stated “The fibers of my personality are interwoven, I feel, with some indestructible element of the place; and this element is superior to time and chance”.

Perhaps the best true preservation of a Central VA home due to its continual use and loving maintenance as is best evidenced by the century old wallpaper installed by Ellen in her writing room still being intact. As equally noteworthy is the home's architectural significance. Mary Wingfield Scott was stirred to write in Houses of Old Richmond that “The house is in the most perfect condition of any of the remaining Greek Revival mansions.” and “The Doric columns of the entrance are considerably heavier than those of the Barret, Clarke or Bransford houses. The Glasgow mansion gives an impression of solid dignity”.

With ample room for a family of any size and zoning that allows a wide variety of live-work options, this home is perfectly suited for today’s busy life while offering a serenity only found in a historic home that is best enjoyed sitting on the porticoed read porch overlooking the walled rear courtyard. Having the opportunity and privilege of owning this property is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
