Property History
It is constructed in the British tradition of Cotswold but as the pictures show it is as close to a castle as you can get in North America. It was commissioned by Doctor James White, as a wedding gift to his wife, one of the daughter of the founder of the neighboring village, Rosemont, and is still known in town as the White House. It predates the church next store, which was also commissioned by Dr. White, circa 1870s, for his daughters weddings. It was a private home, county office building, and apartments/offices. The deed description for this house, is almost an inch thick.

Property Description
Welcome to the historic White House in Canajoharie, NY.

Located 40 minutes west of Albany on Interstate 90 (exit 29), on one of the many marinas on the Mohawk River - Erie/Barge Canal system, (www.nycanal.com), Canajoharie is the home of one of the largest collections of the world famous artist, Winslow Homer. Just 30 minutes from the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Farmers' museum, and Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, it is in the heart of James Fenimore Cooper's "Leather Stocking Tales" and the Glimmer Glass Opera.

This historic Cotswold granite mansion is an imposing structure overlooking the Canajoharie Creek and the village Park. It was commissioned by Doctor James White, one of the village founders, as his wedding gift to his wife, and the granite comes from the same quarry as the Brooklyn Bridge. Historically known in town, as "the White House", it has 190 feet on the Canajoharie Creek, and is two blocks from downtown and the marina. The Erie Canal walking tour lists and describes this house.

This house has a total of 5 stories (about 6,000 sq ft), and is terraced to the Canajoharie Creek, bordering the town park.

It is presently gutted and ready for continued restoration. The bull work has been completed, along with the main electrical (sub panels on each floor), awaiting your final plans. The roof has been replaced with manufactured slate, and copper gutters are available.

First level has poured cellar floor with 'walk out' access.

Second level (one of five) has been renovated, as an apartment for perhaps, a caretaker, condo, or 2 more bedrooms and baths for a Bed & Breakfast.

At street level is the main floor which has divided space for living, dining, utility rooms, library, kitchen, and den.
Fourth floor can have 4 large bedrooms with closets and adjoining baths.

The top level was most likely servants' quarters, with 3 adjoining rooms. The Great room has 25 foot ceiling and panoramic views.

Original woodwork, shutters, doors & cast brass hardware, a mahogany & walnut staircase, along with two granite & soapstone fireplaces in mint condition, and are intact.

The condition is ideal for renovation in the design and usage needed by the new owner. Perfect site for condos, apartments, single family home or YOUR Bed & Breakfast.
