Within a year of his arrival, he was elected mayor, serving until 1909 when he became postmaster. He was in the State Republican Executive Committee from 1900 until 1918. around 1914, he was overnight host to President Howard Taft. From 1916 to 1920, he was the assistant district attorney. In 1925, Calvin Coolidge appointed him as a Federal Court Judge of the Eastern District of North Carolina. He retired in February, 1945.
The von Trapp Family Singers also dined in the home in the early 1940s when they performed at a concert in Elizabeth City.

Property Description
This grand, neo-Classical Revival, located in Elizabeth City’s Historic District, is known as the Judge Isaac M. Meekins House. Built in 1903, this lavish property contains extraordinary, turn-of-the-century features throughout. A Palladian window and ionic columns flank the entry, the central hallway leads to an open-stringer staircase, and large pocket doors separate the main room on the first floor. Another distinguishing feature of the house are the extravagent fireplaces; each of the eight main rooms contains a unique, ornate fireplace and mantel. Detailed moldings and original hardwood and soft pine floors lie throughout. Spacious front parlors and an oversized dining room, all with 12 foot ceilings, make the home ideal for entertaining.

The home has approximately 6455 square feet with official records reporting 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Two rooms downstairs are being used as a bedroom suite and a potential sixth bedroom lies on the second floor. The oversized attic with high ceilings can be renovated to provide additional living space.
The property’s driveway spans one city block and the grounds include an inground swimming pool, brick fenced, landscaped backyard, a porte-cochere, and a 2-story carriage house.
The house is within walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants, library, and the Waterfront Park with boardwalk and pier.

This rare gem has the potential for a bed and breakfast, wedding venue, and/or meeting house.
