Property History
Built in 1799-1800, it is the earliest Federal period house in St. Michaels, originally owned by Samuel Harrison, a bachelor son in a shipbuilding family. The town’s first post office is said to have been located in the one story kitchen wing. Samuel and his brother were members of the St. Michaels militia in the War of 1812, one listed in the records as a drummer and the other as a fifer. He advertised the structure for sale in the early 1800’s as having been a tavern, noting it was located between the ferry and the county seat, convenient for gentlemen passing through on business. A piece of wood inscribed with Samuel Harrison’s name was found by the owner behind a wall on the third floor of the c. 1799 portion of the house. The house is on the St. Michaels Museum at St. Mary’s Square walking tour map as a significant structure in the National landmark Historic District.

Property Description
The home’s exterior is as enchanting as its interior. It boasts a charming carriage house complete with parking garage, back patio with America in Bloom award-winning gardens, and an elegant sawn baluster two-tier front porch. From its second level following the Civil War, abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke to crowds, after meeting his former slave master inside the home to offer forgiveness, making the property one of profound significance as a place of reconciliation.
