Welcome to the historic Hyco House! A grand 1830's Greek Revival home is within walking distance of shops, restaurants, post office and banks in Mathews. The closest marina is Morningstar, near the Coast Guard station. This home was most recently used as a shop, art gallery, affordable hostel stop over for cyclists, more upscale bed and breakfast rooms (fix your own in the kitchen, or walk across to Hardees!), event venue (ever heard of Hosting a Murder?), and woodworking studio. The Certificate of Occupancy was for a lodge.

Just as famous as this unique house, was it's most recent owner, artisan woodworker, Sam Forrest. His website aptly reads:
"One of a kind pieces from the heart, mind, & hand of a
one of a kind man."

Sam travelled the world, but had roots in Mathews, so he eventually came home. When he purchased the Hyco House in 2018, he renamed it Haiku House, and built a substantial woodworking shop with concrete floor and woodstove, where Sam continued to turn out his beautiful, original furniture designs.

While the house is livable as is, a new owner may choose to return it to original splendor by releasing the random width pine flooring from its vinyl covering and carpeting, upgrading the main kitchen, baths, and adding luxury touches here and there. High ceilings, tall windows and several old coal fireplaces are punctuated throughout with bullseye molding. A heat pump was added to serve the basement living area and main level; second floor rooms have split wall or window units, and there are window unit AC's in the attic rooms.

The main living level has a lovely parlor with tall window-lined music conservatory at the end, formal dining room with fireplace, and doors that open out onto the generous deck; kitchen with rear stairs to a bedroom and bath (former servants' quarters). Two bedrooms and a full bath with shower are on this floor as well. Upstairs are 3 generous bedrooms, one is a suite with bow window and fireplace, full bath. Two additional bedrooms share a hall bath with tub and shower.

The attic hosts 3 cozy bedrooms with window A/C units (lower ceilings) and a hall bath with shower.

Sam chose to live in the basement, where you'll find 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a second full kitchen and living room that he used to practice yoga. The larger bedroom has an attached bath and separate outside entrance.
