Property Description
1930: Spanish Colonial Revival
5,111 square feet. 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms
15k square foot lot

The Russ House is a breathtaking example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

Dramatic.
Romantic.
Mysterious.

The Russ House is not just a structure. It is a time capsule reflecting some of the finest architecture of its time.

A long, “arcade style” front porch shelters the solid oak, arched front door. The formal entry is reminiscent of a romantic Hollywood film, with a sweeping staircase of terracotta-tiled steps trimmed with a unique wrought-iron balustrade.

South of the formal entry, the living room features a soaring barrel ceiling, which combined with the room’s generous proportions, could easily act as a ballroom. The centerpiece of the living room is a stunning Batchelder-style fireplace, with its unique, nautical medallion tile featuring a large sailing ship. Refinished hardwood flooring, French doors, original chandeliers, wall sconces and window hardware complete the vintage features that remain in this impeccably preserved home.

To the north side of the entry is the formal dining room, featuring original hardwood flooring. The irreplaceable hand-painted ceiling is believed to be original to the home. French doors lead from the dining room to the front porch.

Beyond the formal dining room is the breakfast room with another hand-painted plaster ceiling with floral design and tile flooring. The kitchen is large, and the charming features of another era remain as convenient today as when they were new, including a built-in ironing center, and tiled service-sink tucked into a closet. Shaker-style cabinets offer plentiful storage, while bright yellow and green tiles accent the generous countertops and backsplash. Lighting in this room was recently upgraded to recessed fixtures.

Just down the hall from the entry is an office, featuring a fabulous Art Deco-style ceiling and breathtaking Batchelder-style fireplace. This area offers a large closet as well as access to the bathroom, which is discreetly tucked in between the living room and office. Each bathroom in the home offers its own color palette and the tile theme for this downstairs bathroom is a unique blue and taupe design with floral accent tile.

The home offers one downstairs bedroom, another full downstairs bath, as well as a large service porch with generous storage.

Upstairs you will find a comfortable landing and two enormous bedrooms complete with their own dressing rooms en-suite bathrooms, which retain many original tiles and fixtures. There is a walk-down basement accessed from the interior of the house, which features a large safe.

A two-car detached garage is finished, and was most recently used as a yoga studio. Exterior features include wrought iron balconies and delicate original grilles over casement windows, and a Monterey-style wooden balcony. The roughly 15,000 sq. ft. lot offers sunny gardening, mature landscaping, and spacious lawns, which invite one to experience the gracious life of another time.

This was the dream home of citrus rancher Albert Russ and his wife Kathryn Backs Russ, and the last home they ever lived in. Clearly no expense was spared in the construction of this incredible treasure. Russ was a Veteran of the Spanish War. Catherine Russ was the daughter of Anaheim’s Joseph Backs family.

In 1929, contractors R. B. Carey and W. B. Potter began work on the house, which was completed in 1930. The home’s original location was on Orangethorpe Ave, just west of Harbor Blvd., surrounded by orange groves.

The widowed Mrs. Russ sold the surrounding property in 1952 and the house was divided into 3 pieces, moved, and carefully reconstructed in its current location, which was once the end of Euclid Street (then Nicolas Avenue.) In 1963, the Presbyterian Church of Fullerton purchased the house as a parsonage, in 1982 the home was purchased by the Congregational Church of Fullerton where it has served many blessed and joyful years in service to the congregation. The Russ house is now ready to return to its original purpose, as a happy home to one very discerning buyer.
