Property History
Lahey Lost Valley is a mid-eighteenth century brick hall-parlor house with a 1940s brick addition.

The house is located on land that was granted to William Gunnell in 1730. In 1741 Gunnell gave the land to two of his sons to divide. Henry Gunnell received this portion of land and together with his wife Catherine they had built a working plantation by 1760. The Gunnell family were leaders in Fairfax County throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The family continued to own the property through the 1930s.

In 1940 the house and 45 acres were sold to Richard and Carlotta Lahey, who were both artists. The Lahey’s moved a wood framed kitchen addition off of the brick house and used it as a freestanding artist studio. In its place, the Lahey’s constructed a two-story brick addition.

In 1990, Carlotta Lahey arranged with the Fairfax County Park Authority a bequest to be included in her will to donate the house, furnishings, and 22 acres of land. FCPA took possession of the property after Mrs. Lahey passed away in 1999.

Property Description
Lahey Lost Valley Park is a densely wooded park north of Vienna, Virginia. The house is located on approximately 22 acres set within a single family home development with 1 acre lots. The house sits on a rise above a small stream valley.

The historic Lahey Lost Valley property is part of Fairfax County’s Resident Curator Program.

The Resident Curator Program is designed to preserve the historic properties owned or leased by the County, by offering long-term leases to qualified tenants who agree to rehabilitate and maintain these historic resources in accordance with established preservation standards.

A curator can be a private citizen, a non-profit entity, or a for-profit entity, provided that the use is compatible with the property, as determined by the Director of the Fairfax County Park Authority and subject to the standards and criteria of the Resident Curator Program.

Chosen through a pre-defined application process, the selected curator signs a lease which includes the agreed-upon work plan outlining the rehabilitation of the historic resource.
