Property History
In the spring of 1824, a small group formed the Palmyra Cumberland Presbyterian Church in a home near Fritchton. By 1851, land was donated to construct a frame church and was built where the present church stands. The present church was dedicated in August of 1892. Brick used in its construction was manufactured on Monroe Alton’s land that was adjacent to the Alton Cemetery located southwest of the church on E. Palmyra Road. The basement was remodeled by volunteers in the early 1950s to house a fellowship hall, kitchen, and bathrooms. A gable-roofed, ground level addition was added at that time for exterior access to basement. The Presbytery of the Ohio Valley was undertaking pre-demolition work when Indiana Landmarks was able to save it through purchase in 2013.

Property Description
Located approximately 5 miles east of Vincennes, the Palmyra Cumberland Presbyterian Church is situated on a 2-acre wooded lot near Fritchton. It is bounded by Palmyra Road (East) and private land (North, South, and West). Just beyond the private land is US-50 (North and West) and Anson Road (South and West). A cemetery located directly northeast of the property once belonged to the church, but is now owned and maintained by the county.

The church is thought to be designed by local Vincennes architect, J.W. Gaddis, and is Gothic Revival in style. Unfortunately, the Presbytery had completed removal of the church’s stain glass windows and large wood entrance doors. Indiana Landmarks was able to purchase majority of the stained glass windows which will be included with the property at the time of sale. Other original architectural features include:

• Exterior limestone accents and decorative metal
finials
• Interior hardwood floors, decorative wood
ceilings, swinging vestibule doors
• Working bell in steeple

Additional Notes
The lower level featured the fellowship hall, kitchen and bathrooms. A new roof was installed in 2013. The building is in need of complete rehabilitation; however, space is abundant and can be configured to fit new uses. The property will be sold with preservation covenants held by Indiana Landmarks. Indiana Landmarks will work with the new owner on planned rehabilitation.
