Property History
A young Quaker couple from North Carolina brought their grandmother to eastern Indiana in 1827. They settled in an area that is now known as Spiceland. The original home, built in 1843 consisted of two large rooms downstairs and a landing and one large sleeping area upstairs. A cousin by the name of Evans, a local Quaker minister, and his wife, bought this home in 1898. They added bathrooms, additional bedrooms, closets, kitchen, and a wrap-around porch, as well as inside woodwork, and new stairway to the second floor.

Property Description
Own a piece of history in a completely renovated (2007) two-story 10-room charming home in a small town of 900. Features include a wrap-around porch, tall windows, soaring ceilings, new and restored hardwoods throughout, and original woodwork. Six rooms downstairs--formal library/music room with chandelier, tall ceilings and windows and French doors; huge dining room with solid brass German chandelier, French doors and ten-foot dealings; cozy family room surrounded by windows; an exercise room, laundry room with half bath, and an incredible 19x14.5 foot kitchen. The sunny gourmet kitchen has cherry counter tops and maple cabinets. The cherry island has a granite top. The large kitchen boasts a breakfast area overlooking a deck and shade gardens. Upstairs, four charming bedrooms with lovely tall windows, nestle beneath sloping ceilings, with a delightful sitting area in the large master bedroom. A completely updated second-floor bathroom contains an iron claw foot tub, gleaming pedestal sink, hi-rise Toto commode, and a gorgeous granite floor. The entire house is light and airy with many windows and a comfortable lay-out that encourages entertaining and enjoyable living. The grounds include over half an acre with fenced organic garden, grape arbor, raspberry bushes, and a cherry tree. New landscaping in front of the home includes roses, hydrangeas, day lilies, and a Ruby Slippers Maple. A single-car detached garage sits closely to the house and includes a solid-floor attic above. Two new HVAC systems were installed in 2016 and a new water system was installed in 2018 with reverse osmosis for the filtered sink and refrigerator drinking water.

Additional Notes
A distant relative bought this home from the widow of the second family and added a garage in 1971, in the style of the house. Some of the original rock foundation can be seen in the basement. The side porch is a great place for family meals; it is cool in warm weather, and warm in cool weather. The front porch is a favorite spot to swing and greet neighbors. The property backs up to Draper Park. The present owners are the first non-family to own the home, and only the fourth occupants since the orginal construction. Spiceland is truly small-town America, a quiet place for families and retired folks.
